RQ = (Volume of CO2 evolved) / (Volume of O2 consumed)
The value of RQ varies with the respiratory substrate:
- When carbohydrates are used as the respiratory substrate and are completely oxidised (aerobic respiration), equal volumes of CO2 are released for O2 consumed, so RQ = 1.
- When fats are used as the substrate, since fats contain proportionally less oxygen, more O2 is required for complete oxidation than CO2 produced, giving RQ less than 1 (around 0.7). …
