Expanded-octet compounds have a central atom (period >= 3) sharing more than 8 electrons using available d-orbitals; Lewis structures show bonding pairs and lone pairs as dots.

(a) An "expanded octet" occurs when the central atom is surrounded by more than 8 electrons (more than 4 electron pairs), possible only for period-3-or-beyond elements with energetically accessible empty d-orbitals. Two common examples:

  • PCl5 (phosphorus pentachloride) -- P is surrounded by 5 bond pairs = 10 electrons.
  • SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride) -- S is surrounded by 6 bond pairs = 12 electrons. (Other valid examples: PF5, SF4, ClF3, IF7.)

(b)(i) Cl2: each Cl atom has 7 valence electrons. The two Cl atoms are joined by one shared (bonding) electron pair (single covalent bond), and each Cl additionally retains 3 lone pairs (6 non-bonding electrons) to complete its octet.

Lewis structure (text form): each Cl shown with 3 pairs of dots (lone pairs) around it, plus one shared pair of dots (or a line) between the two Cl atoms -- giving each Cl a total of 8 electrons around it.
