Managing it properly addresses three practical concerns:
1. Bad odour:
- Odour mainly arises when the pit becomes anaerobic (lacking oxygen) — for example if it is waterlogged or packed too densely, favouring anaerobic bacteria that produce foul-smelling gases (like H2S and other sulphur/ammonia compounds).
- This is controlled by ensuring good aeration: layering wet, nitrogen-rich waste (kitchen scraps) with dry, carbon-rich material (dry leaves, straw, soil), and periodically turning the compost to let oxygen in, keeping decomposition aerobic and largely odour-free.
- Keeping the pit covered with a layer of soil or dry leaves also helps contain any residual smell.
2. Flies:
- Exposed, moist organic waste attracts flies, which can lay eggs in it (breeding maggots) and spread disease.
- Covering the freshly added waste immediately with a layer of soil or dry material, and avoiding leaving food waste exposed, keeps flies away.
- A well-turned, aerobic pit that does not remain wet and rotting on the surface is much less attractive to flies than an open, exposed heap.
3. Recycling of wastes for a good produce:
- Over a period of weeks to a few months, microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) and — if vermicomposting is used — earthworms break down the organic matter into a dark, crumbly, humus-rich compost.
- This compost is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other micronutrients, and when mixed back into agricultural/garden soil, it improves soil structure, water retention and fertility. …
