What is acid rain? Normal rainwater is already slightly acidic (pH ≈ 5.6) due to dissolved CO2 forming weak carbonic acid. Acid rain refers to rain with a pH significantly lower than this (typically below 5.6), caused by industrial and vehicular emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). These gases react with water vapour and oxygen in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3), which fall to the ground dissolved in rain.
