Oxides of sulphur (SO2, SO3) and nitrogen (NO, NO2) cause acid rain by forming H2SO4 and HNO3; the pH of acid rain is below 5.6 (about 4-5).

Normal rain water is slightly acidic (pH about 5.6) because dissolved CO2 forms weak carbonic acid. Acid rain is rain whose pH has fallen well below this value because it contains stronger acids.

The oxides responsible are:

  • Oxides of sulphur: SO2 and SO3 (from burning sulphur-containing fossil fuels and metal-ore smelting).
  • Oxides of nitrogen: NO and NO2 (formed at high combustion temperatures in engines and power plants).

In the atmosphere these oxides react with water and oxygen:

SO2 + H2O -> H2SO3; 2SO2 + O2 -> 2SO3; SO3 + H2O -> H2SO4

2NO2 + H2O -> HNO3 + HNO2
