The Arrhenius concept defines acids and bases by the ions (H+ or OH-) they release in water; H2O and NH3 can each act as either an acid or a base, so each has both a conjugate acid and a conjugate base.

(i) Arrhenius concept of acids and bases

According to Svante Arrhenius:

  • An acid is a substance which, when dissolved in water, dissociates to give hydrogen ions, H+ (more precisely, H3O+, hydronium ions), increasing the H+ concentration of the solution. Example: HCl → H+ + Cl-.
  • A base is a substance which, when dissolved in water, dissociates to give hydroxide ions, OH-, increasing the OH- concentration of the solution. Example: NaOH → Na+ + OH-.

(ii) Conjugate acid and conjugate base

A conjugate acid is formed when a species gains a proton (H+), and a conjugate base is formed when a species loses a proton (H+) (Brønsted–Lowry framework).

(a) H2O

  • Gaining a proton: H2O + H+ → H3O+ (hydronium ion) — this is the conjugate acid of H2O. …
