Bronsted-Lowry theory defines acids and bases in terms of proton transfer; pH is the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration, a scale for measuring acidity.

(i) Bronsted-Lowry concept: According to this concept, an acid is a substance that can donate a proton (H⁺ ion) to another substance, and a base is a substance that can accept a proton from an acid. Every acid-base reaction involves the transfer of a proton from the acid to the base, generating a conjugate base and a conjugate acid respectively.

Example: HCl (acid, donates H⁺) + NH3 (base, accepts H⁺) → NH4⁺ + Cl⁻
