Buffers keep pH nearly constant because they contain a reservoir of an acid and its conjugate base (or a base and its conjugate acid) that can neutralise small additions of H+ or OH-.

A buffer solution is one whose pH does not change significantly when a small amount of a strong acid or a strong base is added to it, or when it is diluted. Buffers are of two main types:

  • Acidic buffer: a mixture of a weak acid and its salt with a strong base, e.g. CH3COOH + CH3COONa (acetic acid + sodium acetate), which maintains an acidic pH (~4.74 for equal concentrations).
  • Basic buffer: a mixture of a weak base and its salt with a strong acid, e.g. NH4OH + NH4Cl, which maintains a basic pH. …
