Buffer resists pH change. Acidic buffer = weak acid + its salt (CH3COOH + CH3COONa, pH<7); basic buffer = weak base + its salt (NH4OH + NH4Cl, pH>7).

A buffer solution keeps its pH almost constant when small amounts of acid or base are added, because it contains a reserve of both a weak acid/base and its conjugate partner.
