Heavy water is water made with deuterium (²H/D) instead of ordinary hydrogen; its main use is as a neutron moderator in nuclear reactors.

Heavy water is the compound D2O (deuterium oxide), where the ordinary hydrogen (¹H, protium) atoms of water are replaced by deuterium (²H, D), the heavier isotope of hydrogen. It has a slightly higher density and boiling point than ordinary water (H2O) because deuterium is about twice as heavy as protium.
