Lassaigne's test converts covalently bound N, S and halogens in an organic compound into detectable ionic sodium salts; homolysis and heterolysis are the two fundamentally different ways a covalent bond can break, giving free radicals versus ions respectively.

  1. Elements detected by Lassaigne's test Lassaigne's test (sodium fusion test) is used to detect the presence of elements such as nitrogen, sulphur and halogens (Cl, Br, I) in an organic compound, by fusing the compound with sodium metal to convert these elements into water-soluble sodium salts (NaCN, Na2S, NaX) which are then tested for using characteristic reactions (e.g. Prussian blue test for N, lead acetate test for S, silver nitrate test for halogens). Any two: Nitrogen and Sulphur (halogens are also acceptable).
  2. Two differences between Homolysis and Heterolysis
BasisHomolysis (Homolytic fission)Heterolysis (Heterolytic fission)
How the bond breaksThe shared pair of electrons splits equally, one electron going to each atomThe shared pair of electrons goes entirely to one of the two atoms
Species formedTwo neutral, highly reactive free radicals (each with an unpaired electron)An oppositely charged pair: a carbocation (or other cation) and a carbanion/anion
