Fusion with Na converts S to Na2S; test the extract with sodium nitroprusside (violet colour) or with lead acetate after acidifying (black PbS).

Principle: Covalently bound sulphur in an organic compound is converted to ionic sodium sulphide by fusing the compound with sodium metal: 2Na + S -> Na2S. This dissolves in water to give the sodium fusion (Lassaigne's) extract.

Detection tests:

(a) Sodium nitroprusside test: add a few drops of freshly prepared sodium nitroprusside solution to the extract. A violet (purple) colour, due to formation of Na4[Fe(CN)5NOS], confirms the presence of sulphur. …
