Bohr: electron in fixed quantised orbits (mvr = nh/2pi), energy emitted/absorbed on jumps (delta E = h(nu)). It explains H stability and spectrum but fails for many-electron atoms and finer spectral effects.

Postulates of Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom:

  1. The electron moves around the nucleus in certain permitted circular paths called stationary states (orbits) of fixed energy; while in an orbit it does not radiate energy.
  2. The angular momentum of the electron is quantised: mvr = n(h/2pi), where n = 1, 2, 3... (principal quantum number).
  3. Energy is emitted or absorbed only when the electron jumps between two orbits; the energy difference appears as a photon: delta E = h(nu).

Merits (any two):

  • Explains the stability of the atom (electron in a stationary state does not spiral into the nucleus).
  • Successfully accounts for the line (emission) spectrum of hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions.

Limitations (any two):

  • Fails to explain the spectra of atoms containing more than one electron. …
