Bohr proposed quantized circular orbits for the electron in a hydrogen atom, but the model breaks down for multi-electron atoms and finer spectral details, and conflicts with the uncertainty principle.

Postulates of Bohr's model:

  1. The electron in a hydrogen atom can move only in certain fixed circular orbits (called stationary states or allowed energy levels) around the nucleus, without radiating any energy, even though it is undergoing acceleration (contrary to classical electromagnetic theory).

  2. Only those orbits are permitted for which the angular momentum of the electron is an integral multiple of h/2π (quantization of angular momentum):

    mvr = nh/2π, where n = 1, 2, 3, ... (the principal quantum number)

  3. Energy is emitted or absorbed by the atom only when the electron jumps from one stationary orbit to another (i.e., changes its energy level). The energy difference between the two orbits is emitted or absorbed as a photon of frequency ν, given by:

    ΔE = E2 − E1 = hν

Demerits (limitations) of Bohr's model (any two):

  1. It successfully explains the spectrum of hydrogen and hydrogen-like (one-electron) species only, but fails to explain the spectra of multi-electron atoms. …
