- Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle For microscopic particles such as electrons, it is impossible to determine simultaneously, with absolute accuracy, both the exact position and the exact momentum (or velocity). If Δx is the uncertainty in position and Δp is the uncertainty in momentum, then: Δx · Δp ≥ h / 4π where h is Planck's constant. This means that the more precisely the position of an electron is known, the less precisely its momentum can be known, and vice versa. This principle is the reason the idea of a fixed orbit/trajectory (as in the Bohr model) had to be replaced by the probabilistic idea of an orbital.
