All alkali metals react with atmospheric/molecular oxygen when heated, but the product differs down the group because of the differing stability of oxide, peroxide (O2²⁻), and superoxide (O2⁻) ions with different cation sizes:
- Li (very small cation, high polarizing power/charge density) → only the normal oxide, Li2O.
- Na → mainly the peroxide, Na2O2.
- K, Rb, Cs (larger cations) → mainly the superoxide, KO2, RbO2, CsO2. …
