Alkali metals burn in an excess supply of dry oxygen to give three structurally different classes of oxide across the group, and lithium and sodium each represent a different one of the first two classes.

Lithium is the only alkali metal that gives a normal oxide on burning in excess oxygen:

4Li+O2⟶2Li2O4\text{Li} + \text{O}_2 \longrightarrow 2\text{Li}_2\text{O}

This happens because the very small Li+\text{Li}^+ ion pairs most favourably, in terms of lattice energy, with the small O2−\text{O}^{2-} ion, making the normal oxide the thermodynamically preferred product for lithium specifically.

Sodium, being a larger cation than lithium, instead gives predominantly the peroxide on burning in excess oxygen:

2Na+O2⟶Na2O22\text{Na} + \text{O}_2 \longrightarrow \text{Na}_2\text{O}_2 …
