For a satellite in a circular orbit (with PE = 0 at infinity), total energy E = -KE.

For a satellite of mass m orbiting a planet of mass M at radius r:

Potential energy: U = -GMm/r

Kinetic energy: K = (1/2)mv² = GMm/(2r) (from the orbital condition mv²/r = GMm/r²)

Total energy: E = K + U = GMm/(2r) - GMm/r = -GMm/(2r)

Comparing E to K: E = -GMm/(2r) and K = +GMm/(2r), so E = -K.
