Escape speed is the minimum launch speed to leave a body's gravity permanently; the Moon has none because its low escape speed lets gas molecules escape.

(a) Escape speed (or escape velocity) is the minimum speed with which an object must be projected from the surface of a planet or moon so that it overcomes the gravitational attraction and moves off to infinity without ever returning. By equating kinetic energy to the magnitude of gravitational potential energy:

(1/2) m v_e^2 = GMm/R => v_e = sqrt(2GM/R) = sqrt(2 g R).

For Earth this is about 11.2 km/s.
