Hydraulic lift: a small force F1 on the narrow piston (area A1) transmits equal pressure to the wide piston (area A2), giving F2 = F1(A2/A1).
Hydraulic lift: a small force F1 on the narrow piston (area A1) transmits equal pressure to the wide piston (area A2), giving F2 = F1(A2/A1).

Pascal's law says pressure in an enclosed fluid is transmitted equally everywhere; the hydraulic lift figure uses this to turn a small force on a narrow piston into a large force on a wide piston.

Pascal's law: When pressure is applied at any point of a fluid enclosed in a container (and the fluid is at rest / incompressible), that increase in pressure is transmitted equally and undiminished to every point of the fluid and to the walls of the containing vessel.

Applying this to the figure: two connected cylinders of cross-sectional areas A₁ (narrow, left) and A₂ (wide, right) are filled with the same connected fluid. A downward force F₁ is applied to the small piston, creating a pressure

P = F₁ / A₁

By Pascal's law, this same pressure P is transmitted, undiminished, through the fluid to the larger piston of area A₂. So the upward force available at the larger piston is:

F₂ = P × A₂ = F₁ (A₂ / A₁)
