Young's modulus measures a solid's resistance to stretching/compression along its length — the ratio of longitudinal stress to longitudinal strain — with unit pascal (N/m²).

When a wire or rod is stretched (or compressed) along its length by a deforming force, within the elastic limit, the ratio of the longitudinal (tensile) stress applied to the resulting longitudinal strain produced is a constant for the material, called Young's modulus (Y).

If a force F is applied normally over a cross-sectional area A, causing an elongation ΔL in an original length L:

Longitudinal stress = F/A

Longitudinal strain = ΔL/L

Young's modulus:

Y = (Longitudinal stress) / (Longitudinal strain) = (F/A) / (ΔL/L) = FL / (A·ΔL)
