Modulus of elasticity = stress/strain (unit Pa, dimensions [ML^-1T^-2]); an elastomer is a material with very large elastic strain, e.g. rubber.

(a) Modulus of elasticity of a material is defined as the ratio of stress to the corresponding strain within the elastic (proportional) limit:

Modulus = stress / strain.

Since strain is dimensionless, the modulus has the same units and dimensions as stress:

  • SI unit: N/m^2 = pascal (Pa).
  • Dimensions: stress = force/area = [M L T^-2] / [L^2] = [M L^-1 T^-2]. …
