A heat engine is a device that continuously converts heat energy into mechanical work by working in a cycle. It has three essential parts:
- Source (hot reservoir) at a high temperature T1, from which the working substance absorbs heat Q1.
- Working substance (e.g. an ideal gas) that undergoes a cyclic process, converting part of the absorbed heat into useful work W.
- Sink (cold reservoir) at a lower temperature T2, to which the remaining heat Q2 is rejected.
