A heat engine is a device that converts heat energy into mechanical work by taking a working substance through a repeated (cyclic) sequence of processes. The basic requirements/schematic elements are:
-
A source (hot reservoir) at a high temperature T1, from which the working substance absorbs a quantity of heat Q1 in each cycle.
-
A working substance (such as a gas confined in a cylinder fitted with a piston), which undergoes the cyclic thermodynamic process — expanding to do external work on the surroundings and then being brought back (compressed) to its original state, ready to repeat the cycle.
-
A sink (cold reservoir) at a lower temperature T2, to which the working substance rejects a quantity of heat Q2 in each cycle (heat that could not be converted into work).
