Mollusc gills serve both breathing and feeding; platyhelminth flame cells serve both water balance and waste removal.

Both structures are classic examples of a single organ performing more than one physiological role, a recurring theme in the Animal Kingdom chapter.

(a) Gills in Mollusca

  • Gills (ctenidia) are thin, feathery, richly vascularised structures in the mantle cavity.
  • Respiration: water flows over the gill surface and O2/CO2 exchange occurs across the thin gill epithelium into the blood (open circulatory system in most molluscs).
  • Filter-feeding: in bivalves especially (e.g., mussels, oysters), the beating of gill cilia draws in a water current, and mucus on the gill surface traps suspended food particles, which are then moved towards the mouth — so the gill doubles as a feeding structure.

(b) Flame cells in Platyhelminthes …
