Flatworms are acoelomate because, although they are triploblastic (have mesoderm), the mesoderm forms a solid mass of tissue between the body wall and gut instead of a hollow, fluid-filled cavity (coelom).

Based on the presence or absence and type of body cavity, triploblastic animals are classified as acoelomates, pseudocoelomates, or coelomates.

In flatworms (phylum Platyhelminthes, e.g. Planaria, tapeworm, liver fluke), mesoderm is present between the ectoderm and endoderm (making them triploblastic), but this mesoderm remains as a compact mass of parenchymal tissue rather than hollowing out into a fluid-filled space. Since there is no cavity at all (not even one lined only partly by mesoderm, as in pseudocoelomates), flatworms are described as acoelomates.
