The gut wall is built of four concentric layers, outside to inside: serosa, muscularis (already given), submucosa, and mucosa, whose innermost epithelium lines the corrugated/villous lumen.

The wall of the alimentary canal (from the oesophagus to the rectum) is composed, outermost to innermost, of: the Serosa -- a thin outer covering of connective tissue; the Muscularis -- arranged as an outer longitudinal layer and an inner circular layer of smooth muscle (already labelled in the figure), responsible for peristalsis; the Submucosa -- a layer of loose connective tissue with blood vessels and nerves, lying just inside the muscularis; and the Mucosa -- the innermost layer, lining the lumen and thrown into folds/finger-like projections (villi, giving the wavy/corrugated appearance in the figure) to increase surface area for secretion and absorption …
