A multi-layered tissue with flat cells on top and columnar cells at the base is stratified squamous epithelium, whose job is protection; it lines the skin and the oesophagus.

Epithelial tissues are classified partly by number of cell layers; a 'multi-layered' arrangement, as shown, is diagnostic of a stratified type.

(a) Identification and function

  • The tissue shown is stratified squamous epithelium: it has several stacked layers of cells, with cells becoming progressively flatter (squamous) towards the free/outer surface, and a basal layer of more cuboidal/columnar cells that continuously divide to replace the cells lost from the surface.
  • Main function: because it is many cells thick, it provides strong mechanical protection to the underlying tissues against abrasion, physical wear, and entry of pathogens/desiccation.
