Simple epithelium is a single-cell-layer covering/lining tissue, categorised as squamous, cuboidal, or columnar by the shape of its cells.

This is an either/or question; the primary part is answered here.

Epithelial tissue covers the body's outer surface and lines its cavities, tubes, and ducts. It is called "simple" when it is composed of only a single layer of cells resting on a basement membrane. Based on cell shape, simple epithelium is of three main types:

  1. Simple squamous epithelium — made of flat, thin, plate-like cells fitted closely together like tiles. It is found where rapid diffusion or filtration is needed, such as the walls of blood vessels (endothelium) and the alveoli of the lungs, since its thinness offers minimal resistance.

  2. Simple cuboidal epithelium — made of cube-shaped cells, often with a centrally placed spherical nucleus. It is found lining kidney tubules and the ducts of glands, where it is involved in secretion and absorption.
