Maslow's need hierarchy has five levels, satisfied from the bottom up: Physiological (basic) → Safety → Social (belonging) → Esteem → Self-actualisation. Once a lower need is met it stops motivating, and the next higher need becomes the motivator.

In the Kerala Plus Two (DHSE) Commerce "Directing" chapter, Abraham Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory explains motivation. The complete hierarchy, from the lowest to the highest need, is:

(1) Basic / Physiological Needs

  • The most basic needs for survival — food, water, clothing, shelter and sleep.
  • At work, these are met mainly through basic salary and wages.

(2) Safety / Security Needs

  • The need for physical and economic security — protection from danger, job security, stable income and pension.
  • Met through job security, safe working conditions and insurance/retirement benefits.

(3) Social / Affiliation / Belonging Needs

  • The need for love, affection, friendship, belonging and acceptance by others.
  • Met at work through good relations with colleagues, teamwork and a sense of belonging to the group.

(4) Esteem Needs

  • The need for self-respect, status, recognition, importance and appreciation.
  • Met through recognition of good work, promotions, titles and respect from others.
