Abraham Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory states that human needs fall into five levels arranged in ascending order, and a person is motivated by the lowest unsatisfied need; once a need is satisfied it no longer motivates, and the next higher need becomes the motivator.

Maslow classified human needs into five levels, from the most basic to the highest:

  • Physiological needs — basic needs for survival such as food, clothing, shelter, water and sleep; usually met through salary.
  • Safety / security needs — need for physical and economic security, such as job security, safe working conditions and protection from danger.
  • Social / belonging / affiliation needs — need for love, affection, friendship, belongingness and acceptance in a group.
  • Esteem needs — need for self-respect, recognition, status, prestige and appreciation from others.
  • Self-actualisation needs — the highest level; the need to realise one's full potential and become what one is capable of becoming.

Key assumptions of the theory:

  • People's behaviour is based on their needs.
  • Needs follow a hierarchy, from basic to higher.
  • A satisfied need cannot motivate a person; only an unsatisfied need can. …
