Management is rightly described as a series of continuous, interrelated functions — planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling. They are continuous because they recur throughout the organisation's life, and interrelated because each function is linked to and depends on the others, together forming one integrated process aimed at achieving organisational goals.

Management is defined as a process of getting things done with the aim of achieving goals effectively and efficiently. Calling it a 'process' means it is a series of ongoing functions performed by managers. The statement that management is a series of continuous interrelated functions can be justified as follows.

The functions of management. Management consists of five broad functions:

  • Planning — deciding in advance what to do, how to do it and who is to do it; setting objectives and preparing plans.
  • Organising — arranging resources, dividing work, assigning duties and establishing authority relationships to carry out the plan.
  • Staffing — filling and keeping filled the positions in the organisation with the right people.
  • Directing — leading, guiding, motivating and communicating with employees so that they work towards the goals.
  • Controlling — measuring actual performance against planned performance and taking corrective action.

Why the functions are 'continuous'. These functions are not performed once and finished. They are carried on repeatedly and simultaneously throughout the life of the organisation. A manager plans, organises, staffs, directs and controls again and again as situations change, so management is an unending, ongoing process.

Why the functions are 'interrelated'. Each function is closely linked with the others and cannot be performed in complete isolation:

  • Planning provides the base for organising, staffing, directing and controlling.
  • Organising and staffing put the plan into a working structure with people.
  • Directing sets the organised, staffed resources into action. …
