Certain naturally disease-causing organisms have, in nature, evolved the ability to transfer their own DNA into a host's cells — biotechnologists have harnessed this ability, after disarming their pathogenicity, to use them as vectors for delivering desired genes into plant and animal host cells.

Plant cells — Agrobacterium tumefaciens:

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a bacterial plant pathogen that causes crown gall disease. It naturally transfers a segment of its Ti (tumour-inducing) plasmid, called T-DNA, into the plant cell's genome, where it gets inserted and expressed, causing gall formation. Biotechnologists have modified this Ti plasmid, removing its disease-causing (tumour-inducing) genes and replacing them with a gene of interest. This 'disarmed' Agrobacterium is now widely used as a natural vector to deliver desired genes into plant cells, which is the basis for producing many transgenic plants (e.g. Bt cotton).
