Agrobacterium tumefaciens is the classic bacterial vector used in genetic engineering to deliver foreign DNA into a host cell.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a natural genetic engineer — in nature it transfers a segment of its Ti plasmid (T-DNA) into the cells of the plants it infects. This natural gene-transfer ability has been harnessed in biotechnology, where the tumour-inducing (disease-causing) part of the Ti plasmid is disarmed and replaced with the gene of interest, so the bacterium delivers the desired gene into the target cell's DNA instead.
