Acid-catalysed Markovnikov hydration converts propene to propan-2-ol; reduction converts ethanal to ethanol; zymase is the enzyme that ferments glucose to ethanol.

(i) A. Propene to Propan-2-ol:

Propene undergoes acid-catalysed hydration. Following Markovnikov's rule, the -OH group adds to the more substituted carbon (via the more stable secondary carbocation):

CH3-CH=CH2 + H2O --dil. H2SO4--> CH3-CH(OH)-CH3 (Propan-2-ol)

B. Ethanal to Ethanol:

Ethanal (acetaldehyde, an aldehyde) is reduced to the corresponding primary alcohol using a reducing agent such as NaBH4, LiAlH4, or by catalytic hydrogenation:

CH3CHO + H2 --Ni/Δ--> CH3CH2OH (Ethanol)
