(i) Markovnikov addition of water to propene gives the secondary alcohol propan-2-ol; (ii) a Grignard reagent adding to formaldehyde followed by hydrolysis gives a primary alcohol with one more carbon than the Grignard's alkyl group.

(i) Acid catalysed hydration of propene: CH3-CH=CH2 + H2O --(H⁺)--> CH3-CH(OH)-CH3
