Aldol condensation forms a β-hydroxy carbonyl from a self-addition reaction; simple test-tube tests (Tollens'/Fehling's, FeCl3/NaHCO3) distinguish the given pairs; and Rosenmund reduction / the Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky reaction achieve the two named transformations.

a) i) Aldol condensation

Aldol condensation is the reaction in which two molecules of an aldehyde or ketone possessing at least one α-hydrogen atom combine, in the presence of a dilute base (or acid) catalyst, to form a β-hydroxy aldehyde (aldol) or β-hydroxy ketone (ketol). On further heating, this product can lose a molecule of water (dehydration) to give an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound.

a) ii) Aldol from ethanal

2CH3CHO --dil. NaOH--> CH3-CH(OH)-CH2-CHO

(3-hydroxybutanal, commonly called 'aldol')

b) Distinguishing tests

i) Propanal (CH3CH2CHO) and propanone (CH3COCH3): Propanal, being an aldehyde, is readily oxidised and gives a positive Tollens' test (forms a bright silver mirror on the test-tube wall with ammoniacal AgNO3) and a positive Fehling's test (forms a brick-red precipitate of Cu2O with Fehling's solution). Propanone, a ketone, does not reduce Tollens' or Fehling's reagent and gives negative results with both tests.

ii) Phenol and benzoic acid: Phenol gives a violet/purple colouration with neutral ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution, while benzoic acid does not give this colouration. Alternatively, benzoic acid (being a stronger acid than carbonic acid) gives brisk effervescence of CO2 gas with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) solution, while phenol (a weaker acid than carbonic acid) does not react with NaHCO3.

c) Reagents for the transformations
