A Grignard reagent adds to the nitrile's C≡N carbon to give a ketimine intermediate, which is hydrolysed (in acid) to the ketone.

An alkanenitrile, R–C≡N, is treated with a Grignard reagent, R'MgX:

R–C≡N + R'MgX → R–C(=N–MgX)–R' (an imine-magnesium salt / ketimine intermediate)

This addition compound is then hydrolysed with dilute acid (H3O⁺):

R–C(=N–MgX)–R' + H2O/H⁺ → R–CO–R' + NH3 (+ Mg salt)
