Water protonates both Grignard reagents, and since both carry a propyl group, each gives propane.

Grignard reagents (R–MgX) have a strongly nucleophilic/basic R group. When they meet a compound with an active (acidic) hydrogen such as water, they are decomposed to the corresponding alkane:

R-MgBr+H2O→R-H+Mg(OH)Br\text{R-MgBr} + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow \text{R-H} + \text{Mg(OH)Br}

Here both reagents supply a C3_3H7_7 group:

  • Isopropyl-MgBr: (CH3)2CH-MgBr+H2O→(CH3)2CH2=CH3CH2CH3(\text{CH}_3)_2\text{CH-MgBr} + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow (\text{CH}_3)_2\text{CH}_2 = \text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_3 (propane) …
