The Van Arkel method purifies metals like Zr and Ti via a volatile iodide intermediate; and the four named ores match their respective metals — bauxite/Al, malachite/Cu, calamine/Zn, magnetite/Fe.

a) Metals refined by the Van Arkel (iodide) method

Zirconium and Titanium are commonly refined by this method. The impure metal is heated with iodine vapour in an evacuated vessel to form the volatile metal tetraiodide (e.g. ZrI4 or TiI4). This vapour is then passed over a red-hot tungsten filament (~1800 K), where it decomposes to deposit the pure metal on the filament and releases iodine, which is recycled to react with more impure metal.

b) Matching the ores to their metals

(i) Bauxite (Al2O3·2H2O) → (d) Aluminium
