d- and f-block elements find wide practical use as industrial catalysts, structural metals/alloys, and in speciality materials.

  1. As catalysts: Many transition metals and their compounds are effective catalysts because of their variable oxidation states and ability to form complexes/intermediates with reactants. Examples: V2O5 in the Contact process (manufacture of H2SO4), finely divided Fe as catalyst in the Haber process (NH3 synthesis), and Ni as catalyst in the hydrogenation of vegetable oils.

  2. As structural and alloy materials: Iron (as steel) is the most widely used structural metal in construction, machinery and transport. Transition metals also form useful alloys, e.g., stainless steel (Fe, Cr, Ni), brass (Cu, Zn), bronze (Cu, Sn); mischmetal (an alloy rich in lanthanoid/f-block metals with iron) is used in making lighter flints and in Mg-based alloys for jet-engine parts.
