- Systems using space wave propagation Space waves travel in a straight line (line-of-sight) from transmitting to receiving antenna, including the ground-reflected wave, and are used for frequencies above about 40 MHz where the ionosphere no longer reflects them. Two examples: Television (TV) broadcasting and satellite/mobile (cellular) communication.
- Why modulation is necessary A message (baseband) signal is usually of low frequency (e.g. audio, a few kHz). Transmitting it directly is impractical because:
- The size of an efficient antenna is comparable to the wavelength (); a low frequency needs an antenna many kilometres long, which is not practical.
- Radiated power for a given antenna size is very small at low frequencies, so the signal would not travel far.
- If many baseband signals (all in a similar low-frequency range) were transmitted together, they would mix and could not be separated at the receiver. …
