A Wheatstone's bridge is a four-arm resistor network used to measure an unknown resistance; at balance the galvanometer shows no deflection and P/Q=R/SP/Q = R/S.

Circuit: Four resistances PP, QQ, RR, SS form the four arms of a quadrilateral ABCD (PP between A–B, QQ between B–C, SS between A–D, RR between D–C). A cell (with a key) is connected across the opposite corners A and C, and a galvanometer (with a key) is connected across the other pair of opposite corners B and D.

Balancing condition: The bridge is said to be balanced when no current flows through the galvanometer (B and D are at the same potential). Applying Kirchhoff's laws to the balanced bridge gives the condition:
