Isotopes share the same Z (proton number) but differ in A and N; isotones share the same N (neutron number) but differ in Z and A.

For a nuclide, A=Z+NA = Z + N (mass number = proton number + neutron number).

Isotopes are nuclides with the same atomic number Z (same element) but different mass number A. Since N=A−ZN = A - Z and Z is fixed while A differs, the neutron number N must also differ between isotopes.
