Copulation (coitus) only makes fertilisation possible — it does not guarantee it, since fertilisation and pregnancy depend on several additional physiological conditions being met.

I do not agree with the statement. Copulation results in the insemination of sperms into the female genital tract, but this by itself does not ensure fertilisation or pregnancy, because:

  1. Timing with ovulation: A viable ovum must have been released (ovulation) and be available in the fallopian tube around the time of copulation; sperm and egg are each viable for only a limited time (sperm ~2–3 days, ovum ~24 hours in the human reproductive tract).
  2. Sperm count and motility: The semen must contain a sufficient number (normal range 200–300 million/ejaculation) of actively motile sperm with normal morphology (at least ~60% each) capable of swimming up to the ampullary-isthmic junction, where fertilisation normally occurs.
  3. Use of contraceptives: If a couple uses a contraceptive method (barrier, IUD, oral pill, etc.) during copulation, sperm may be prevented from reaching/fertilising the ovum. …
