Besides universality, the genetic code is triplet, non-overlapping/comma-less and largely degenerate/unambiguous; AUG is the start codon, coding for methionine.

Other salient features of the genetic code (any two):

  1. Degenerate (redundant): Since there are 64 possible codons but only 20 amino acids, most amino acids are coded by more than one codon (e.g., leucine, serine and arginine each have 6 codons).
  2. Triplet, contiguous, non-overlapping and comma-less: The code is read in groups of three nucleotides (a codon codes for one amino acid); it is read continuously from a fixed starting point without any punctuation (commas) between codons, and successive codons do not share nucleotides (non-overlapping).
