AUG codes for methionine and doubles as the start (initiator) codon; UAA, UAG and UGA are the three stop (termination) codons, which do not code for any amino acid.

(a) The genetic code is read in triplets called codons. Among the 61 codons that specify amino acids, AUG has a dual role: it codes for the amino acid Methionine (in eukaryotes; N-formylmethionine in prokaryotes), and it also universally signals the ribosome to begin translation — hence it is called the initiator/start codon. Protein synthesis therefore always begins with methionine (which may sometimes be removed later during protein processing).
