Q.Two statements are given below followed by two conclusions numbered

(1) and (2). Take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts. Statements: Some ants are parrots. All the parrots are apples. Conclusions:
  1. All the apples are parrots.
  2. Some ants are apples.
Give answer:
(A) If only conclusion

(2) follows.
(D) If neither

(2) follows.

"Some ants are parrots" combined with "All parrots are apples" validly gives "Some ants are apples" (conclusion 2); conclusion 1 wrongly converts the universal statement "All parrots are apples", so it does not follow.

Syllogism rule (Some + All = Some): if "Some AA are BB" and "All BB are CC" share the middle term BB, then "Some AA are CC" follows validly. A universal statement "All BB are CC" cannot be simply converted to "All CC are BB."

Here AA = ants, BB = parrots, CC = apples.
