Exercise 5.4 · Q6

Q.In the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry traced his family history and got to know that he is related to the Peverell brothers. Let's assume that he had traced his family back for 15 generations starting with his parents; how many ancestors did he have in total? Try this exercise at home. To make it more interesting you could draw the family tree with the photos of your relatives. See if you have more relatives than Harry Potter. (Adopted from augusta.k12.va.us)

Each generation back doubles the number of ancestors (2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, ...); sum this GP for 15 generations.

Sum of the first nn terms of a GP: Sn=a(rn−1)r−1S_n=\dfrac{a(r^n-1)}{r-1}, where a=a= first term (ancestors in generation 1), r=r= common ratio, n=n= number of generations.

  1. Generation 1 (parents) =2=2 ancestors, so a=2a=2.
  2. Each generation back has exactly twice as many ancestors as the one before it (each person has 2 parents), so r=2r=2.
  3. Number of generations traced: n=15n=15.
  4. Substitute: …
