The platyhelminthes are commonly called flatworms because the body is flattened from the upper to the lower surface. Most of them live as endoparasites within other animals, including human beings, and their peculiar features reflect this parasitic way of life.
The features worth noting are:
- Body form. The dorso-ventrally flattened shape gives a large surface relative to the body and suits life pressed against or within host tissues.
- Attachment devices. The parasitic forms are equipped with hooks and suckers that let them hold firmly onto the host so they are not dislodged.
- Nutrition. Some of these worms take in nutrients straight through their body surface, absorbing food directly from the host rather than taking it in through a mouth.
- Body organisation. They are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic, acoelomate (no true body cavity between the gut and body wall), and organised at the organ level, with tissues arranged into organs.
- Excretion and osmoregulation. These are managed by specialised cells known as flame cells. …
